A Walk in the Deverills
For this walk we climb Cold Kitchen Hill which rises to 257 metres and stands at the centre of the Deverill Valley. This modern place name is thought to be derived from the Celtic Col Cruachen, the 'Hill of the Wizard'. Many things of historical interest have been found here including building materials, human bone, coins, jewellery and religious objects, which suggest a temple stood here at one time and was in use from prehistory to the Romano-British times. In fact, another completely different suggestion for the origin of the name is that the site was given this name after it was abandoned: a cold kitchen because no one lived here.
